Prepress Specifications
Electronic Prepress Specifications "Quick Card"
Please provide your working files along with a PDF proof for reference. We do not print directly from the PDF for compatibility reasons. If you supply only a PDF for print, it may delay your project, please contact the graphics department if you have a problem or need any assistance.
- We support up to the following versions of these industry standard programs.
- QuarkXpress 7 (Quark 8 by InDesign Conversion plugin)
- Illustrator CS4
- InDesign CS4 (Our Quark templates open in InDesign)
- Photoshop CS4 (If your layouts are in Photoshop, follow the below steps.)
- Text should stay as an active font layer.
- Do not use the Bold or Italic buttons. Choose the style from the style menu.
- Fonts that have Faux Bold or Faux Italic styles added to them will be rasterized on vector output.
- Add a minimum of 1/8" bleed to all pages, images & artwork.
- Special instructions for CD/DVD Image layout.
- Please don't apply styles to fonts; choose the actual font. Truetype and MultiMaster fonts can be unpredictable.
- Send only the fonts required to produce the job. Remember to include vector program fonts (Illustrator & Freehand) and fonts used in image paint programs (Photoshop).
- Include all hi-res images/art (300-350dpi; placed at no more than 125% original size). Images over 350dpi can be problematic.
- Try to avoid embedding images in Illustrator or FreeHand files. Linking to independent image files is more efficient.
- It is important to use file extensions because they give a quick an easy visual way of seeing what the file types are.
- All RGB images need be converted before they are submitted, if we must do a conversion, possible delay or problems may occur.
- Please be sure to use our templates. If you are being quoted a job, please make sure to reference the quote number # for the specific die number you're going to use.
- CMYK or PMS
- For CD or DVD discs, when flat color, or vector art is used, it will speed up the turn around time of your job, and create a clean, clear image on the disc. Ask your sales rep about this process.
- For Print components, use only CMYK color unless spot colors are part of the design, if so, please identify PMS colors as such.
- Include 100% sized color lasers of the most current document.
- If your submitting your artwork without printed proofs, include a PDF for soft-proofing.
- Pressready PDF's are not allowed, we must have the working files. Please contact us about your project, we can determine if your project is right for our PDF work flow. All responsibility for making any changes will fall back on whoever supplies the PDF, we are unable to edit pressready PDF's. If your designer can not be contacted, we may have to put your project on hold.
Compressing Files for Upload
This will reduce the size of the file considerably and will help in the transfer. Do not upload a project folder without compressing it. The individual files may loose their resource and become corrupt. Upload time will be considerably longer if you do not compress your project.
OS X Users can use the built in Archive option by Control + Click or Right + Clicking on the project folder.
OS 9 Users can use DropStuff (.SIT)
PC Users can use WinZIP (.ZIP)
Do not email files over 2MB in size, if it is larger then 2MB please upload it to our FTP site via the instructions below.
FTP Software
You can also use Fetch or Transmit, but we highly suggest that you try out YummyFTP.
